Will my LED landscape lighting melt snow?

It seems that winter is finally coming to central PA, and if you are anything like me, you are probably thinking "I wonder if my new LED landscape lights will melt the snow?"  OK, so maybe you weren't thinking it before, but you are now, right? Well, the answer is yes.  And no.  Most professional grade LED fixtures generate enough heat to melt any snow that falls when they are on.  Many less-expensive LEDs on the market do not produce very much light since they are under-powered.  Because of this, there is not a lot of heat generated, limiting their ability to melt snow and ice as it hits the fixtures.  So the answer is "Yes" if you buy high quality LED fixtures, but "Maybe" or "No" if you buy low-quality LED fixtures.

Quality LEDs (the ones that quality landscape contractors install) will radiate more heat.  Why is this?  These fixtures are designed with internal heat sinks that pull the heat away from the LEDs and out into the housing.  This is done to increase the longevity of the LEDs, with the added benefit of heating up the housing. While they won't get hot enough to burn you (unlike incandescent light fixtures), they will heat up enough to melt the kind of snow and ice events that we typically receive here.

Now if we get completely buried in snow or ice, particularly during the daytime when the lights are off, it might take some time (hours or possibly even days) for the melt to occur after the lights come on.  This kind of snow event is rare enough around here that most people are not going to worry about what their landscape lighting looks like for that short period of time.  The benefits of LED lighting far outweigh this concern in most peoples' minds.

So the bottom line is this... Have a quality designer install quality LEDs, and you can enjoy the benefits of LED landscape lighting all year long, including during all but the very worst of snowstorms that come along.

EasyPro Joint Stabilizer makes short work of finishing a patio, even in the rain!

One of our contractors recently installed a (roughly) 500 square foot patio using Techo-bloc's Blu 60 in the Sandlewood color.  For most contractors, one of the final steps to finish this project would have been the installation of polymeric sand into the joints between the pavers. Problem: it was supposed to rain later in the afternoon on the day that the job was supposed to be finished.  (With regular poly sand you cannot apply it when it is going to rain.)

Solution: EasyPro joint stabilizer by Unilock.  Not only can EasyPro be applied when it is going to rain, but it is actually applied with water!

The whole joint stabilizing process took about 1 hour to finish the 500 sq ft patio.  Here are some pictures from the job:

2013 Pennsylvania Garden Expo Pictures

Here are some pictures from the 2013 Pennsylvania Garden Expo.  We were the host of the "Ask the Experts" Area of the show, in the Featured Gardens Area.  Many green industry experts presented topics ranging from permeable pavers to LEDs in landscape lighting to how to stretch fresh mozzarella cheese!  Special thanks to Rynn Caputo of Caputo Brothers Creamery for the great demonstrations, and the great cheese!  We also had the opportunity to serve up pizza next to the front entrance to the show.  The pizza was cooked on our Wood Fired brick ovens by none other than Joe Mishler, Executive Chef at Devon Seafood Grill in Hershey, PA.

Many of our contractor customer were exhibiting at the show, building dream gardens that included outdoor kitchens, firepits, Chicago Brick Ovens, ponds, pondless waterfalls, landscape lighting, and so much more.  Essentially, if you could dream it for in your Outdoor Living Area, it was shown at the show!  We will be posting more galleries showing the work of the landscapers soon.

The 2013 PA Garden Expo was a great time!

Recently, Watson Supply sponsored the Featured Gardens and the "Ask the Experts" Stage at the 2013 Pa Garden Expo, held at the Pa Farm Show Complex. Area landscape contractors built 2500 square foot garden exhibits that included Patios, Water Features (including ponds, pondless waterfalls, bubbling fountains, Colorfalls, and overflowing vases), Pergolas, Wood Fired Brick Ovens, Outdoor Kitchens, Plants, and Landscape Lighting. Three times each day, the room lights were turned off so that visitors could experience "Nighttime in the Gardens".  Extensive landscape lighting throughout the displays showcased how beautiful properly designed outdoor lighting can be.  Joe Mishler, Executive Chef at Devon Seafood Grill in Hershey, PA, was on hand cooking pizza in our Chicago Brick Ovens outside the main entrance to the show. Attendance was strong, and interest was high. I think everybody has Spring Fever! Here is short video showing some of the highlights of the show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyDS5_PKYwI

If you came to the show, what was YOUR favorite thing?  Was it the free brick oven pizza?  The "Nighttime in the Gardens" times?  The Gardens themselves?  Leave a comment below and let us know what you loved about the Expo.  We enjoyed all of it, and it was great being involved.

Nothing beats pizza made with your own sauce!

Joe Mishler B&W

Joe Mishler B&W

We recently had the privilege of enjoying some pizzas cooked by Joe Mishler on our Chicago Brick Oven using Joe’s own sauce recipe. Joe is the Executive Chef at Devon Seafood Grill in Hershey, PA, so you could say that he knows cooking! The pizzas were some of the best we’ve ever tasted. Joe was nice enough to share his sauce recipe with us so that we could share it with you. Use this recipe as it is, or feel free to adjust amounts or ingredients to make it your own. Keep in mind, the fresher the ingredients, the better the sauce will taste. Also, cooking outside on a wood-fired oven adds smoky flavor and makes the whole experience even better. Enjoy! Pizza Sauce

15 oz can of tomato sauce 1 tbsp dry basil 1 tsp dry oregano 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder (add extra for garlic lovers) 1 tsp kosher salt 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp crushed red pepper (optional)

Mix all together and blend well. For best flavor, make sauce 2-3 hours before use
